What is a weep hole and what is its purpose?

Have you ever noticed holes or plastic tubes in the mortar joints just above your foundation? Sometimes there is a small length of rope sticking out of the joint instead of a hole.  Are you thinking “Wow, this is sloppy construction?”  Well, the rope is meant to be there. Don’t seal it up or try to remove it because it serves a purpose.

While a masonry wall is the first line of defense against water penetration, it also can leak. Masonry is porous and will absorb moisture in extreme weather conditions. Weep holes are what allow water to drain from behind a masonry wall.
