Heavy Snow Damage?
Do you think the heavy snow damaged my roofing?
The snow we had was fast, drifting and built up heavy. A good shingle in good shape will not have been damaged in any way, the same for a good rubber flat roof.
We’ve seen damage done to roofing when someone shoveled off the snow the wrong way. This could lead to problems and we have replaced individual shingles before.
If the roofing was starting to “buckle” meaning you could see the roofing either “pillowing up” or the edges curling up, this means the material was drying out and brittle. The weight of the snow and ice could crack the sections off. You should be able to see missing pieces on the roof, or even in your yard. If you notice this, it is important to have a reputable roofer inspect and advise you.
The other thing worth mentioning is the snow/ice load in “complex” areas: valleys, flashings, skylights, tie-ins. These areas could be susceptible to the weight pulling away or separating the flashings. This type of damage is harder to spot by sight.
A suggestion for everyone is to take a good look at your home – inside and out. On the inside you should inspect the ceilings, corners and window jambs for any spots or water. On the outside look at the room, notice the trims, vents and gutters. Don’t forget to look on the ground and in the bushes around the house for any roof pieces, tabs, etc. From your thorough inspections you should feel comfortable your roof made it through “the big snow!”
