Patio versus deck – what are my options?

First ask yourself how you will use your outdoor space.  Will it be an extension of your interior living space such as an outdoor living room or kitchen?  Will it be a play area for your children?  Will you install a hot tub?

Next, consider your budget.  Installing a wood deck might seem the most economical way to go, but yearly maintenance is necessary to keep your wood deck looking its best.

Some pros and cons to installing a deck might include:

¨    If your lot isn’t level, a deck can easily be installed regardless.

¨    Design possibilities are endless when working with wood, but the more detail, the more  cost involved.

¨    Whether you prefer the look of natural wood or want to stain or paint, the colors available allow you to customize the finish.

¨    New decking materials are available such as composite and vinyl.  These materials are more resistant to insects, warping, splintering, and while they require less maintenance than natural wood they are more expensive.

¨    Pressure-treated lumber is significantly less costly than other products, but requires yearly maintenance and has a shorter lifespan.

Some pros and cons to installing a hardscape patio:

¨    There are several materials available for patios, from pavers to cement.

¨    You can create different designs to fit your specific needs for the space.

¨    If you go with cement you no longer need to stay with the boring gray color.  There are many colors and textures available.

¨    You may need to do some significant site preparation to ensure proper grading and drainage.

¨    With pavers you will need to sweep sand in the “grout” lines.

¨    With cement it can crack with settling.

To sum it up a deck is usually the most affordable option, and concrete is often the most durable and lowest maintenance.  With all the different materials and design options out there now, it shouldn’t be hard to settle on something you will love!
