Your house may or may not have a deck already installed.  If you already have an existing deck, you still have options to give it a new look.

Composite decking has provided great options to add more color, style, and durability compared to the old wooden decks once prominent.  The composite materials are blended with wood fibers to give a resembling look of wood.  There are multiple colors offered and various grains to select from.  Since all the colors are pre-finished it is easy to add patterns with contrasting colors within the deck.  The decking is only fastened by screws and all deck colors have coordinating screw colors to match.  Another attractive option to choose is a hidden fastener system that keeps all the fasteners concealed.  The railing options come in colors that match the deck colors or a complimentary contrasting color is another great way to make it stand out.  There are several post cap designs to choose from creating another nice detail of the overall deck.

Now for the design, if you have an existing deck, all the components can be removed leaving the sub-structure, framing is inspected and necessary framing is added to meet the composite requirements for installation.  After this step your new composite decking and railing is ready for installation.  If you are starting from scratch, your design will be done around space available on the property and how you would like to use the space including bbq, entertaining, sitting, privacy, etc.

Lastly, wood is still a viable option.  Pricing is more affordable and with proper maintenance and up keep it can last for years.  Pressure treated wood offers lengthy protection of the wood from rot.  Cedar is beautiful but proper care and maintenance will be key in giving it lasting beauty.
